A driver was killed after her vehicle was hit by a falling tree on Interstate 680 in Danville on Monday.
The incident occurred at around 8:55 a.m. in northbound lanes near El Cerro Boulevard. The vehicle, a silver Mercedes 350 sedan, was severely damaged by the falling tree.
The driver of the vehicle was trapped in her car, and had to be extracted by authorities. She was declared dead at the scene, and has been identified as Lyudmila Beyzer, 58, a doctor at John Muir Health.
The tree, which was over 50 feet tall, appeared to be a pine tree, and fell onto the freeway from a nearby hill. Locals said that the tree was dead with a decayed root system, and some questioned why it was not removed by workers with the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans).
Multiple lanes of the freeway were also blocked for several hours until the fallen tree could be removed, causing severe congestion.
The incident remains under investigation.
