Two young adults were killed in a collision in Redding on Friday.
The collision occurred at around 12:30 a.m. at Hartnell Avenue and Churn Creek Road. A Toyota Corolla was stopped at a red light on southbound Churn Creek when it was rear-ended by a Ford Freestyle traveling south at a high rate of speed, sending both vehicles into the intersection.
Two occupants of the Corolla, including the driver, suffered serious injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene. They have been identified as Erica Young, 19, and Wa-Rec Lacy Mae Jackson, 18.
Three other occupants of the Corolla were hospitalized with various injuries. They include Ralph Joseph, 19, who was injured in his left arm and leg, Daisy Reece, 18, who experienced head pain, and Clifford Bailey, 19, whose jaw was fractured. None of the injuries are believed to be life-threatening.
The Ford Freestyle contained only one occupant, 25-year-old Kendra Andersen Schwegerl. She was hospitalized with minor injuries, and was arrested on suspicion of DUI. She faces numerous charges, including DUI causing bodily injury and vehicular manslaughter.
The collision remains under investigation. All people involved were believed to be wearing seat belts.
