The victims and the representatives of the fatal crash of Redondo Beach, 13 miles from Long Beach, California, received a settlement from the court on Thursday, March 5th. The court awarded $295 000 as damages to be paid by Margo Bronstein and the State Department of Transportation, both defendants.
The SDP will pay $265 000, while Bronstein will pay the remaining $30 000. The latter is the driver that crashed into a crowd of pedestrians who were leaving a church in 2014 and killed four people.
The deceased people include a Samuel Gaza, 6, who got pinned under the front tire of Bronstein’s Saturn, and his mother, Martha Gaza, 36. The other two are Mary Ann Wilson, 81, and Saeko Matsumura, 87.
The money got allocated to about a dozen plaintiffs’ outside the representatives of the people who died, including minors. A Torrance Superior Court judge would review the amount given to the children before final approval.
The accident that led to the lawsuit occurred at about 8 p.m. on December 17th, 2014. Bronstein ran a red light at the intersection of the Pacific Coast Highway and Vincent Street in Redondo Beach.
The driver continued after hitting the pedestrians and slammed into another vehicle. In 2016, Bronstein was charged with four counts of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence and pleaded no contest.
The woman testified in a deposition that she has no recollection of the crash as she blacked out from excruciating neck pain. The court sentenced Bronstein to three years and four months in state prison, as she was not under the influence at the time of the accident and had no prior criminal record.
