A man has died following an accident involving at least six vehicles on the southbound 605 freeway in Santa Fe Springs Tuesday.

The victim had been driving a Nissan Stanza, and was struck at least four times. Identified as Victor Javier Macedo, 55, of Santa Fe Springs, he was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Ed Winter, assistant chief of investigations and operations for the coroner’s office.

The collision is being investigated as a possible hit and run. California Highway Patrol Officer Al Perez said officials don’t know which car caused the initial impact in the crash, which killed one man, injured three others and forced the closure of all southbound lanes for five hours.

Officer Perez said that an unknown vehicle caused the first impact, around 3.40am. That vehicle rear-ended Macedo’s Stanza, causing him to lose control. He had been traveling southbound on the 605 Freeway near the Telegraph Road exit north of the 5 Freeway. The Stanza was then hit by a Nissan Altima, causing it to spin around toward the center median. The vehicle came to rest facing incoming traffic.

A Ford Fusion traveling southbound then hit the Stanza head on and skidded to the right shoulder where it caught fire, Perez said. The Stanza was hit again by a gray Toyota Tacoma, which was struck by a second silver Toyota Tacoma after veering off to the right across several lanes. After that a Nissan Sentra struck the silver Tacoma, Perez said.

The driver of the Fusion and the driver of one of the Toyota pick-up trucks suffered major injuries and were transported to St. Francis Medical Center in Lynwood, Perez said. A third driver, a 35-year-old man from Fontana, was transported to Kaiser Permanente Downey Medical Center with a bruised neck and chest pain.

All three were in stable condition and no other injuries were reported, Perez said.
