A 16-year-old girl was killed on Tuesday in Beecher after the car in which she was a passenger was struck from behind.

The collision occurred at around 4:45 p.m. in the 1900 block of West Indiana Avenue. A blue Ford Ranger was attempting to turn into a driveway,and had stopped to wait for oncoming traffic, when it was struck from behind by a silver Ford Fusion and pushed into oncoming traffic.

The Ranger was hit on the passenger side by an eastbound Dodge Ram, and the female passenger was hospitalized with serious injuries and pronounced dead approximately three hours later. She has been identified as Francesca Athanasopoulos, 16.

The driver of the car, a 17-year-old male who was Athanasopoulos’ boyfriend, was also hospitalized with minor injuries, while the other two drivers refused treatment at the scene. They have not been publicly identified.

The driver of the Ford Fusion was cited for failing to reduce speed to avoid an accident. He has been identified only as a 36-year-old male.
