Two women were killed in a collision involving a truck on Interstate 55 in Hamel on Tuesday.

The collision occurred at around 6:15 p.m. in southbound lanes near milepost 27.5. A southbound semi truck collided with seven other vehicles also headed southbound, totaling several.

Two occupants of a 2010 Kia Forte were killed. They have been identified as Madisen Bertels, 17, the driver, and Hailey Bertels, 20, a back seat passenger. The two victims were sisters, and both were pronounced dead at the scene.

Another passenger in the Forte was hospitalized with undisclosed injuries, but she has not been publicly identified.

At least a dozen others were injured in the collision, two critically. Their names have also not been released.

The trucker, who has not been identified, survived the crash, but police are uncertain why he ran into the cars in front of him. It is reported that he was traveling at around 60 miles per hour at the time of the incident.
