A man was killed in a three-vehicle collision involving two semi trucks on Interstate 57 in Marion on Tuesday.

The collision occurred at around 10:14 a.m. in northbound lanes in the vicinity of Milepost 47 near Illinois 148. A GMC van slowed because of construction up ahead, and was hit from behind by a Freightliner semi truck.

The crash pushed the van into the vehicle in front of it, a Kenworth semi truck. Crushed between the two semis, the driver of the van was pronounced dead at the scene. He has been identified as Wayne Maxwell, 57, of O’Fallon.

The driver of the truck which struck Maxwell, Willie Lee Shelby of Mississippi, was ticketed for failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash. The collision remains under investigation, and Shelby may face additional charges.

The driver of the second truck has been identified as Jagpreet Singh of Kansas. He does not appear to have been injured, although his truck along with the other two vehicles were severely damaged.
