Several people were injured in a six-vehicle pileup on northbound Interstate 55 in Springfield on Sunday.
The incident occurred near mile marker 102 at around 5:30 p.m. Traffic was already slowed from a previous crash, when a semi truck failed to stop and rear-ended another vehicle, which subsequently collided with three more vehicles.
The driver of the semi truck also swerved into another lane and struck a sixth and final vehicle before finally stopping.
The driver of the semi truck has been identified as Jimmie Cox, 64, of Missouri. Not all of the other people involved have been named. However, the other drivers include Julie Swanson, 48; Colton Stoneburner, 27; Jimmie Taylor, 57; Tyler Parnell, 21; and an unnamed 47-year-old male from Huntley.
Taylor was also driving a semi truck; the rest of the drivers appear to have been behind the wheels of passenger cars. The passengers of the various vehicles, who have not been publicly identified, include one man, four women, and eight children.
Multiple people have been hospitalized as a result of the accident. Their identities and the precise nature of their injuries have not been revealed, but it is reported that some of the injuries involved were very serious.
The collision is under investigation and it is unclear whether any charges or citations have been filed against Cox or any other party.
