The Nissan had a head-on collision with a 2005 Honda S2000, brought on by the driver, Michael Hanson of Lompoc. The latter was traveling north on the highway when he lost control of the Honda and collided with Hernandez.

Both drivers sustained severe injuries, but are still alive; they were airlifted to the Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital where they received treatment. The CHP is still investigating the cause of the crash but has not cited any of the drivers.

Car collisions are frequent in California and are usually brought on by driver’s impairment. Authorities have asked drivers to ensure they do not drive when they are intoxicated or suffering from sleep deprivation.

Drivers should drive within the speed limit so that they can slow down in time to prevent a collision. Motorists should also maintain their lane and avoid taking the wrong way.

Failure to obey traffic rules and signs is an offence under California law. Offenders face serving a short time in jail, paying a fine, or both.
