The San Diego County Coroner’s Office on Sunday, February 16th, released the name of the man who died in a vehicle-versus-pedestrian accident. He is 54-year-old, Felipe A. Cassarubias of Pico Rivera, California.
The deceased passed away at 4:45 p.m. at the Scripps Memorial Hospital, La Jolla, where he was undergoing treatment for his injuries. The coroner listed the cause of death as a traumatic head injury sustained from the accident.
There was no toxicology test as the deceased was a pedestrian. Cassarubias got hit on the evening of Thursday, February 13th, at Interstate 5 south of Manchester Avenue, Cardiff by the Sea, California.
That evening, the deceased parked his truck in the southbound emergency lane along Interstate 5. He alighted and had only taken a step when an oncoming vehicle hit him.
Witnesses called 911, and paramedics came and took Casarrubias to the hospital. He responded to treatment for a while until he succumbed to his injuries.
The California Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. The driver of the car that hit the deceased stayed behind at the scene of the accident to help CHP officers, and give an account of the accident.
Traffic officials and authorities have made it clear that drivers should always remain at the scene of the accident to help with the investigation. Fleeing is an offense under California law, and it is classified as a hit-and-run.
A hit-and-run accident is classified as a misdemeanor or felony under CVL, and depending on the circumstances of the case. Offenders face jail time and a fine, or both.
