Authorities said a 16-year-old New Bedford girl was killed in a four-vehicle wreck Sunday on U.S. 195.

The Bristol District Attorney’s Office today identified the victim as Gisella Carrier, according to local media reports. Eight others were injured in the crash, which occurred at about 8 p.m. Sunday, authorities said.

According to Massachusetts State Police, traffic had slowed on eastbound U.S. 195 due to a traffic fire near Exit 1. An eastbound truck, driven by a 43-year-old Johnston, R.I., man, failed to stop in time and struck the rear of another vehicle.

The crash set off a chain or rear-end wrecks involving four vehicles. Carrier, a passenger in the first vehicle that was rear-ended, was transported to Rhode Island Hospital, where she was pronounced dead from her injuries, according to the district attorney’s office.

Also injured in the wreck were a 17-year-old girl, who was a passenger in the truck; a 40-year-old New Bedford woman and a 14-year-old boy, who were in the vehicle with Carrier; and two New Bedford men, ages 24 and 27, and two New Bedford women, ages 22 and 24, who were in the third vehicle.

The driver of the fourth vehicle, a 34-year-old Providence man, was evaluated at a local hospital, according to police. Authorities have not identified the other people injured in the crash.

The incident remains under investigation.
