Modesto Car Accident Victim Marrya Canales, Crashed 60 Feet Down an Embankment

On Sunday morning, March 1st, Marrya Canales, 48, drove her car off a roadway in Modesto, California. The vehicle was partially submerged in about 60 to 70 feet of water on the edge of an embankment.

Chief Eric DeHart of the Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Protection District said Canales was sitting in her car for several hours before she got rescued. An eye witness told the authorities that at about 10:45 a.m., the woman’s vehicle was sighted but thought to be abandoned.

Later in the afternoon, the eye witness passed by the embankment and sighted Canales in the crashed vehicle. The witness placed a call to 911, and emergency services were dispatched to the scene.

On getting there, they found the woman alive and responsive and used a rope system to send rescuers down the steep bank. The water was mostly on the passenger side of the car, which made it a bit easy for the rescuers to get Canales out of the vehicle.

An interview with the California Highway Patrol uncovered that the woman was run off the road by a truck. But the authorities had a hard time believing the driver’s story as she appeared disoriented and out of sorts.

Medics examined the woman for head injuries and found none. She also had no life-threatening wounds but was taken to the hospital with an ambulance for treatment of cuts and medical checkup.

The CHP and other local law enforcement agencies were at the scene of the accident. They are still investigating the cause and trying to find out why Canales failed to dial 911 and get help.
