Driver In Vista Wreck That Killed Yasmeen Shaheen Pleads Guilty

A woman who pleaded guilty this week to being intoxicated behind the wheel when she crashed into another vehicle in Vista, killing one, likely will be sentenced to more than eight years in prison.

Maritza Millan, 55, of Indio, on Wednesday pleaded guilty to gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and driving under the influence. She is set to be sentenced April 2, authorities told local media outlets.

The California Highway Patrol said Millan was driving on Valley Center Road on Aug. 3 when she attempted to pass another vehicle. She struck another vehicle head-on.

Yasmeen Shaheen, 84, of Escondido, was a passenger in the second vehicle. She sustained serious injuries and died on her way to an area hospital, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The driver of the second vehicle and another passenger also suffered serious injuries. Millan received treatment at a local hospital as well, authorities said.

Local prosecutors said as a result of Millan’s guilty plea, she likely will be sentenced to eight years and eight months behind bars. She is being held in jail without bond as she awaits sentencing.
