Two people who engaged the police in Alamo, 13 miles from Oakland, California, in a chase that ended in a crash, have been apprehended. The police arrested them on Thursday, March 5th, and identified them as Michael Gutierrez, 36, of Union City, and Carolina McDaniel, 31, of Hayward.
The two were being chased in connection with thefts in San Ramon. According to the police report, officers were driving near Danville Boulevard and El Portal at about 10:40 a.m. when they sighted a black Lexus suspected in the thefts.
They tried to get it to pull over, but rather than stopping, Gutierrez, who was driving the vehicle, drove north on Danville Boulevard. The officers then pursued but called off less than a minute after when the car drove towards Alamo.
Soon after they called the chase off, the Lexus crashed into two cars on the boulevard, overturned, and landed on its roof. Gutierrez suffered minor injuries, but there’s no information on whether McDaniel was also injured.
The crash led to the closure of Danville Boulevard and Livorna Road for hours, and fire services were deployed to the area. Gutierrez is facing felony charges on suspicion of evading police, hit-and-run and violating probation.
The police have not stated what charge McDaniel will face, and her jail booking record was not available at the time of the report. California law frowns against reckless driving, and drivers’ jeopardizing their lives and that of other road users.
Drivers are admonished to always drive safely within the speed limit, and in obedience to traffic laws. They are to pull over when stopped by the police and cooperate with officers.
