Authorities of San Diego County, on Saturday, March 14, disclosed the identity of a man killed in an auto-bicycle accident two weeks ago in Escondido, California. The county’s Medical Examiner’s Office identified the deceased as 21-year-old Joseph Edwin Palacios of Escondido.
The ghastly accident took place at about 8:04 am on Friday, March 6, at the intersection of Cedar Street and East Grand Avenue.
Investigators at the crash site determined that bicyclist was riding his bicycle, heading north on Cedar street, while the involved vehicle, a Dodge Grand Caravan, driven by a 39-year-old Escondido man, was travelling through the east traffic lane.
Upon reaching the intersection, the bicycle rider failed to yield to the stop sign at the road crossing and was struck by the minivan, rendering him unconscious. The victim was declared dead on the scene after several failed attempts by paramedics to revive him.
The vehicle driver, whose name was withheld, was confirmed to be a resident of the Escondido. He remained on the scene until the arrival of the San Diego County police officers and offered the necessary details of the accident without incident. He was not injured in the fatal collision.
Following the crash, the road crossing between Cedar Street and East Grand Avenue as well as the east traffic lanes of Grand, linking Beech and Date streets were shut down for hours until the necessary on-scene investigations were completed.
Investigative procedures are still underway to determine the cause of the crash.
