The man killed in an accident in North County, San Diego, California, has been identified. The Medical Examiner’s Office identified him on Monday, March 16th, as Hilton James, an 85-year-old driver, who resides in the Mira Mesa neighborhood of San Diego.

The accident that claimed the life of the older man occurred early this month on March 3rd, and he died from injuries sustained from the crash. The medical examiner in the autopsy report noted that the deceased lived with his wife — name withheld — until the day he died.

On the unfortunate day of the accident, at about 7 p.m., James was driving a Ford Ranger on the north lanes of Valley Center Road near the Rincon Reservation when the road curved, and the Ford drifted towards the southbound lanes.

James’ vehicle sideswiped a Chevrolet Tahoe and collided head-on with a Chevrolet Silverado. When paramedics arrived, they found the man unresponsive and pronounced him dead at the scene.

The driver of the Silverado, identified as a 59-year-old man from Vista, and his passenger, an 89-year-old female, also from Vista, complained of pain and were taken to the hospital.

The only person who went unscathed is the driver of the Tahoe, a 38-year-old woman from Escondido. The cause of the crash is still under investigation, and impairment does not seem to factor in the accident.

Older people can drive for as long as practicable, but they also have a high accident rate, second only to young teenage drivers. Older drivers are advised to drive more during the day, avoid being on the road at dusk or dawn, and do away with distractions.
