Police: Brothers Luis Garibay-Avina, Santiago Damian Avina Jr. Killed In Modesto Crash

Authorities have released the names of two people killed in a two-vehicle wreck Saturday morning in Modesto.

Luis Garibay-Avina, 28, and Santiago Damian Avina Jr., 22, both of Crows Landing, were killed in the crash, which occurred just before 7 a.m. on California 132, according to the California Highway Patrol. No other injuries were reported as a result of the incident.

Troopers said Harinder Chhina, 39, of Tracy, was driving west on California 132 at about 7 a.m. Saturday when his semi-tractor trailer struck another vehicle at the intersection with South Hart Road. Garibay-Avina, the driver of the other vehicle, and Avina, his passenger, suffered fatal injuries, investigators said.

No citations or charges have been announced by authorities. The California Highway Patrol continues to investigate the incident.

According to a GoFundMe campaign organized by a family member, the two were brothers who were on their way to work at the time of the crash.

“They both leave behind their mom, dad, nieces and Luis leaves behind his fiancée and 2-year-old daughter,” campaign organizers wrote. “We appreciate any donations … so we can pay both of their services.”

The campaign has raised about $5,700 toward a $15,000 goal since it was launched three days ago.
