Teenager Killed in Vehicle-Bicycle Collision in San Jose Identified as Kasey Espinoza

Authorities have disclosed the identity of the teenage girl who died in a local hospital last week, about four days after she was struck by a vehicle while riding her bicycle on Bernal Road in San Jose, California. The San Jose Police department on Tuesday, March 31, disclosed the fatal victim’s identity as 15-year-old Kasey Josephine Wafler Espinoza.

The tragic incident occurred on Friday, March 20, at the interchange of Bernal Road and Highway 101. The California Highway Patrol confirmed the fatality, disclosing that patrol officers responded to the site of the wreck at about 10:30 pm upon reports of a vehicle-bicycle collision, which left a young girl seriously injured.

Investigating deputies determined that the teenager was riding crossing Bernal Road on her bicycle when a1999 Toyota 4Runner traveling east on the roadway tragically ran her over.

The teen cyclist suffered life-threatening injuries in the collision and was rushed to a medical facility by paramedics via ground ambulance. Kassey succumbed to her injuries on Tuesday, March 24, following a four-day battle to stay alive while undergoing treatment.

The identity of the motorist operating the Toyota was not immediately disclosed. It remains uncertain whether intoxication, impairment, overspeeding, or distracted driving contributed to the fatal collision, as neither was confirmed in the police reports.

The incident remains under active investigation by the San Jose Police, to ascertain the cause of the crash.

Bicycle versus pedestrian accidents are one of the leading causes of traffic-related fatality in the state. Therefore, cyclists plying major routes would do well to be cautious and observe the safety regulations put in place to minimize future occurrences.
