Motorist Who Died in Bakersfield Traffic Crash Identified as Morgan Patrick Herbst

A 44-year-old man who died on Sunday morning after his vehicle veered off the roadway and crashed into a barbed-wire fence and a utility pole in Bakersfield, California, has been identified by the police. The victim’s identity was revealed on Monday, March 30, by the Kern County Sheriff’s Office, as Morgan Patrick Herbst, a resident of Madera.

The California Highway Patrol reported that the fatal collision occurred on the morning of Sunday, March 29. Officers responded to the deadly wreck at about 9:22 am and discovered a man trapped inside his white Honda Sedan, with major injuries.

Investigators gathered that the Sedan was traveling along the north traffic lanes on State Route 99, just south of Lerdo Highway, maintaining a speed of 70 mph.

The vehicle, for reasons yet to be determined, skidded off the right shoulder of the roadway and slammed into a barb wire fence before colliding with a PG&E power pole.

The vehicle sustained front-end damages and began to emit smoke, with the motorist trapped inside.

Firefighters with the Kern County Fire Department rescued the crash victim from the wrecked Sedan and transported him to Kern Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries.

Officials from the Pacific Gas and Electric company arrived at the scene to access damages done to the light pole.

According to the accident reports, authorities believe an underlying medical condition, of an undisclosed nature, might have contributed to the accident.

The fatality remains under investigation by the CHP.
