A woman was seriously injured, and another discovered dead after a semi tractor-trailer crashed into a homeless encampment and struck them in Merced, California. The tragic incident took place on Wednesday, April 8, as stated in the accident reports.
Officers of the California Highway Patrol responded to the crash just after 9:42 pm on Highway 99 and found two casualties, both staying in a homeless camp along the highway, near Child’s Avenue.
Investigators gathered that the mishap resulted from a collision between two vehicles along the roadway, causing one of them to lose control and slam into the encampment.
One of the vehicles was a tractor-trailer driven by 25-year-old Mason Myrick. The big rig was traveling on the #2 lane, in the same direction as a Cadillac sedan, operated by Omar Govea, on the number one lane.
The CHP said that one of the motorists suddenly crossed into the other lane. The maneuver caused the semi driver to lose control of his vehicle, which swerved off the highway and encountered the homeless shack.
While neither of the motorists was injured in the crash, two people within the camp were severely hurt. One of them, who was not immediately identified, died on the scene, while the other suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
The name of the injured woman was disclosed as Crystal Geer. Geer was treated on the scene by paramedics and released.
It was not disclosed in the accident reports whether any of the motorists was charged with a traffic offense.
The incident is still under investigation.
