A motorist was apprehended in San Mateo, California after leading California Highway Patrol officers in a heated chase on I-280, leading to a two-vehicle collision. A state prosecutor on Monday, April 13, announced the suspect’s arrest that may require the expertise of a car accident lawyer.
The tragic occurrence took place just before noon on Thursday, April 9. As reported by the District Attorney, a CHP officer spotted the traffic offender driving erratically along Interstate 280 in an Audi, at 109 mph, and switching lanes indiscriminately.
The patrol officer immediately went after the Audi operator, who then took a swift turn onto Highway 92 to Half Moon Bay.
After engaging the law enforcement agent in a long pursuit, the motorist eventually lost control of his car just as he negotiated a hairpin turn. The vehicle skidded forward and crashed head-on into an oncoming vehicle driven by an unidentified female.
The female victim suffered major fractures to her thumb, wrist and rib, and was transported to Stanford Hospital for treatment.
Authorities identified the traffic offender as David Blackwell, a 19-year-old San Jose man. When he was eventually intercepted, three other teenagers were discovered in the car with Blackwell.
The Audi driven by the suspect was identified as a stolen vehicle. The three other occupants reportedly took no part in the crime, as they were only in the car to hitch a ride to the beach.
Blackwell was taken into custody pending payment of $50,000 bail. He is set to appear in court on April 24. His charges, which were filed on Monday, include three felony counts and three misdemeanors for fleeing police.
A car accident lawyer may be useful in preventing the case from escalating.
