A man is facing multiple charges after crashing at least three sheriff’s vehicles while fleeing police in the Highland area of San Bernardino, California. The incident, which did not result in any fatality, took place on Tuesday, April 28, according to the accident reports.
The incident began when San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputies responded to reports of gunshots fired in an apartment complex on the 2500 block of Baseline Street.
Responding officers, comprising several patrol units, and the sheriff’s helicopter arrived at the Mountain Breeze Villa Apartments complex, where the helicopter observer reportedly spotted a silver Ford SUV fleeing the complex’s parking lot.
Officers said the fleeing vehicle traveled through the parking lot and entered the pedestrian courtyard area in a bid to evade the officers in pursuit.
While driving through the courtyard, the suspect’s vehicle struck the apartment’s groundskeeper, who sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene.
Deputies soon intercepted the suspect just as he tried to leave the complex, using their cruisers to force the SUV into a car parked nearby.
The man abandoned his cornered vehicle and tried to flee on foot, but was caught shortly after and arrested. Authorities identified him as 28-year-old Lasean Jackson.
When officers searched Jackson’s car, they discovered a loaded handgun whose caliber matched that of the fired shell found at the site of the initial gunshot, the accident reports confirmed.
Lasean Jackson was arrested and booked into the West Valley Detention Center on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon against law enforcement and felony evading. In addition, the suspect had an outstanding no-bail felony warrant for violation of post-release community supervision terms.
