At least five juveniles were injured over the weekend after a vehicle they were riding in overturned on Greenspot Road in Highland, California. Police said on Sunday, May 3, that the vehicle operator was suspected of being under the influence at the time, and taken into custody following the incident, which calls for the intervention of a drunk driving attorney.
Reports obtained from the San Bernardino authorities confirmed that the crash took place at about 7:13 pm on Saturday, May 2, near Santa Ana Canyon Road.
Officers gathered from investigations that the suspect was the driver of a 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe conveying at least five passengers, all juveniles, through the west travel lanes on Greenspot Road.
While traveling at an undefined speed, the SUV suddenly swerved off the highway and took to the dirt field beside the freeway before eventually flipping over and coming to rest on its roof.
The children in the vehicle, aged 7-10, were expelled from the car in the process, suffering severe injuries as a result. Officers said they were not restrained when the vehicle crashed.
The juveniles were transported immediately to Loma Linda University Medical Center for treatment. Two of them were listed in critical conditions.
The driver of the Chevrolet, identified as Eric Ortega, 28, was not seriously injured. Police determined that Ortega, who was father to two of the victims, and uncle to three others, was intoxicated while behind the wheels of the SUV.
He was first taken to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center, Colton, for treatment of minor injuries before he was taken into police custody.
He remains held at the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga in lieu of $100,000 bail. He is faced with DUI charges.
Anyone involved in a DUI-related accident can contact a drunk driving attorney for representation.
