Coroner Names Marlene Martinez as Fatal Victim of Oakland Crash

One person died last weekend in a crash in Oakland, California, after a vehicle she was riding in drove off the road. The Alameda County Coroner’s office, in updated accident reports released on Thursday, May 14, named the decedent as Marlene Martinez, 28.

The incident took place at night on Sunday, May 10, in the 4300-block of Grizzly Peak Boulevard, about a mile north of State Highway 24. The crash involved a 2005 Toyota Corolla, which crashed into a ditch at precisely 6 p.m. and left its two occupants with injuries.

Initial reports provided by the Oakland Police Department suggests the vehicle’s driver may have been driving at a high rate of speed when the car crashed. The 23-year-old motorist was reportedly eastbound on Grizzly Peak when his Toyota drifted off the roadway.

Officers said the car skidded past a railing and fell into a ravine. Martinez was a passenger in the vehicle at the time of the crash. She suffered multiple severe injuries, and medics pronounced her dead at the scene.

The young man operating the vehicle was also injured. First responders transported him to a hospital for treatment. Authorities did not disclose the nature of the man’s injuries or his present condition in the accident reports. His name remains undisclosed.

Investigators cited speed as a possible factor in the fatal occurrence. They urged anyone who witnessed the crash to get in touch with the Oakland Police Traffic Investigation Unit.
