One motorist is dead, and another injured following a tragic two-vehicle collision in Braintree, Massachusetts, on Wednesday morning, May 13th. The incident, which sent an elderly victim to his grave, would require the legal input of experienced auto accident attorneys.
Reporting the accident, the Massachusetts State Police said an SUV and a box truck collided at about 9:30 a.m. along Massachusetts Turnpike ramp, in Millbury. Two casualties resulted from the ghastly collision, including a 66-year-old Braintree local.
Preliminary investigations revealed that 66-year-old Richard Nichols was driving an SUV along the Route 20 connector to the Mass Pike. The elderly man suddenly drove his vehicle over a center divider demarcating two opposite lanes of traffic.
A box truck was at the time traveling in the opposite direction in the oncoming lane. Police said the two vehicles slammed into each other head-on before either motorist could avoid a collision.
Emergency responders arrived a few minutes after the crash and tried to rescue the victims from the wreckage, but Nichols did not make it out alive. The box truck driver, a 53-year-old Rhode Island resident, sustained major injuries described as life-threatening. Medics flew him to UMass Memorial Medical Center, Worcester, for urgent medical aid.
Officers did not immediately establish what caused Nichols to cross the median and hit the box truck. The tragic incident is still under investigation by the MSP.
Auto accident attorneys representing the victims may conduct an independent investigation to ascertain exactly how and why the crash happened. If the fault is traced to an external factor outside the control of the victim, a wrongful death claim may be in order.
