An updated accident report released by the Turlock police confirmed the arrest of an alleged car thief who struck a vehicle and fled the accident scene in Turlock, California. The injury accident took place on Thursday, May 21.
The incident kicked off at about 1 p.m., on East Hawkeye Avenue, just west of North Quincy Road. Police said the crash left at least one person injured.
Sgt. Mike Parmely of the Turlock Police Department said the suspect was operating a Chevrolet Pickup, which collided with another vehicle. Following the collision, the motorist, identified as Andrew Huddleston, 37, of Hughson abandoned his car and fled the scene on foot.
Deputies conducted a search in the area, assisted by a police helicopter and the K9 crew to find the suspect. Hours into the search, an off-duty police officer discovered Huddleston hiding in the back yard of a residence in the 1600 block of Smith Drive. The officer restrained him at the location, barely a block away from the crash site, until other law enforcement agents arrived.
Meanwhile, an occupant in the vehicle the suspect collided with sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The accident reports did not disclose the victim’s identity or the condition of the other commuters in the struck car.
A registration check on Huddleston’s vehicle affirmed it was the same pickup reported stolen earlier in Merced County.
Deputies arrested the suspect, who faces charges of possession of a stolen vehicle, auto theft and two counts of hit-and-run with injury. He also has a felony burglary warrant.
