A pilot who lost his life in a tragic plane crash in the Orcutt area of California has been identified, in updated accident reports. The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office, on Thursday, May 21, named the fatal victim as Tigran Garabedyan, a 38-year-old resident of Burbank.
Officers responded to the crash at about 10:45 a.m. on Wednesday, May 20. The plane crashed into the playground of the Ralph Dunlap Elementary School, while en route the Santa Maria Airport.
Preliminary investigations revealed the Cirrus SR20 single-engine airplane took off from the Van Nuys Airport in Los Angeles. Just as it flew over the school’s complex, located about 3 miles from the Santa Maria Airport, it fell onto a basketball court just outside the school and went aflame. The pilot did not survive the aircraft wreck, authorities said.
The accident reports affirmed that the deceased pilot was the sole occupant of the single-engine plane at the time of the crash. A spokesperson for the Santa Barbara County Fire Department, Mike Eliason, said the school was closed when the mishap happened. No one on the ground suffered injury in the crash. Officers are yet to determine the cause of the accident.
An investigation into the tragic incident is ongoing, led by the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board.
Some common causes of plane crash include mechanical failure, bad weather conditions unfavourable for flying, or air traffic controller error.
