A 49-year-old man is facing charges of elder abuse in Ukiah, California, after assaulting a disabled elder citizen in his care. On Tuesday, May 26, officers took Tyler Omler, a caretaker of a care home in Ukiah, into custody in connection with the misconduct.

Confirming the incident, the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office said the victim, a 73-year-old man, resident in the 800 block of Lake Mendocino Drive, notified officers of the affront around 11:20 p.m. The suspect was reportedly the victim’s In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS) care worker. The elderly man told officers Omler pushed and maltreated him during a confrontation earlier that day.

According to the MCSO reports, the two were engaged in an argument when the younger man shoved the victim to the ground. The complainant said he tried to brace his fall by supporting his body weight on his palms, which caused him immediate and severe pain in his arms and right wrist.

The suspect was in total disregard of the elderly man’s plight, as he left him sprawled on the kitchen floor and went to sleep. The victim, who has physical disabilities posing movement difficulties, took approximately an hour to crawl from the kitchen to the living room. He called for help once he finally got hold of the telephone.

When officers responded to the home, they found Omler heavily intoxicated and asleep in his bedroom. They took him into custody on suspicion of felony elder abuse resulting in bodily injury.

He remains held at the Mendocino County Jail in lieu of $25,000. Officers said the elder abuse suspect’s bail was initially capped at zero dollars due to the California zero-bail policy, but a superior judge increased it on demand of the MCSO.
