A man who ended up in police custody over the weekend for causing a suspected DUI crash, which claimed one life in Sacramento, California, would require a drunk driving attorney. The bizarre occurrence played out early on Sunday morning, May 31.
The California Highway patrol recorded the incident shortly after 2:26 a.m. Officers reported that the crash involved at least two vehicles driving along State Route 99, and left a motorist severely injured, and his sole passenger deceased.
Investigations conducted at the scene showed that the victim was traveling as a passenger in a Kia Niro, on the northbound lanes of the State Route. At the same time, a Toyota Tundra, driven by Edgar Mayorga, of Sacramento, was also traveling northbound on the #3 lanes of SR-99, at a high rate of speed. Just as the vehicles were driving past 12th Avenue, the Tundra suddenly crossed into the lane2, where the Kia was moving.
Police said the Tundra then struck the Kia from the rear, causing the struck car to go ablaze, veering in the northeasterly direction. The vehicle then came to rest on the right shoulder of the roadway, still in flames. The driver of the Kia, name held withheld, was able to pull himself out of the burning car, while his passenger remained trapped until the rescue team arrived.
First responders pronounced the 30-year-old female passenger deceased at the scene. The reports identified her as a Rancho Cordova resident. The driver sustained severe burns and is receiving treatment at UC Davis Hospital.
Meanwhile, detectives determined that Mayorga, who went unscathed, was under the influence of alcohol. They arrested him on charges of Felony DUI and Gross Vehicular Manslaughter.
Mayorga remains held at the Sacramento County Main Jail and would require representation by a drunk driving attorney.
