The Shelby County Coroner on Friday, June 5th, identified Sidney K. Manning as the 84-year-old man killed in Shelby County, Illinois. The coroner, Brian Green, said the man passed away from the injuries sustained from the incident.
The accident report released on Thursday, June 4th, placed the auto-pedestrian collision time at about 5:13 a.m. Green was crossing Illinois 16 near 2008 East Road to access Lake Shelbyville walking path close to his home. The Illinois State Police said a westbound vehicle driven by Briar True, 25, of Neoga, then struck the man.
Manning died at the scene, while the motorist did not suffer any injury. The occurrence led to the closure of Route 16, while the ISP investigators gathered evidence and cleared the scene. The crash remains under investigation, and the state police will release updates later.
Auto-pedestrian accidents are not uncommon in Illinois, and pedestrians often suffer fatal wounds from them. Injuries sustained by pedestrians include brain trauma, concussions, intracranial bleeding, broken bones, fractures, internal bleeding, and organ damage.
The best way to prevent pedestrian deaths is by practicing safe road behaviors. Safety tips for pedestrians include using designated crosswalks for crossing, and using the curb when walking. Wear bright colors, avoid calling or texting while walking, and look left-right-left before crossing the road.
Drivers should yield to pedestrians at all times, drive within the speed limit, stop at crosswalks, and obey all stop signs. When a crash occurs, file an accident report immediately to afford any injured person a chance at survival.
