Vanessa Bryant Likely to Seek ‘Substantial Damages’ in Wrongful Death Lawsuit

New media reports say NBA superstar Kobe Bryant’s widow Vanessa Bryant could be suing Island Express Helicopters for a substantial amount.

This follows the filing of a new claim in the Los Angeles County Superior Court.

In the documents, Vanessa’s attorneys pointed out that the January 26 crash that killed Kobe and 13-year-old daughter Gianna Bryant caused hundreds of millions of dollars in future lost earnings.

However, the specific amount being sought in damages is yet to be determined.

The lawyers said Vanessa is seeking economic and non-economic damages, punitive damages, prejudgment interest, and any other relief deemed just and proper by the court.

The lawsuit has been filed against the helicopter company and the estate of the pilot Ara George Zobayan.

The initial claim was submitted in February and it accused the defendants of negligence that contributed to the deaths of Kobe, Gianna, and seven other passengers.

It is alleged that the defendants failed to check weather conditions before the flight and flew into foggy conditions in which Zobayan was not cleared to fly.

The Los Angeles County medical examiner-coroner’s office said all nine passengers died from blunt-force trauma.

Kobe was a five-time NBA champion who went on to become an entrepreneur and filmmaker. He received an Academy Award for his animated short film “Dear Basketball.”

At the time of his death, his fortune was estimated to be $600 million.

He had a substantial ownership stake in Bodyarmor and news reports said this passed to Vanessa and the couple’s surviving children. The stake was reportedly worth $200 million in 2018.
