Maritza Milan Sentenced After Driving Intoxicated and Killing an Elderly Woman

A woman faces a sentence of almost nine years, months after killing an elderly woman in a DUI-induced traffic wreck in Center Valley, California. The office of the Deputy District Attorney went public with the woman’s sentence on Thursday, June 10, while listing out her charges. The suspect was arrested in connection with a traffic collision released last year in accident reports provided by the California Highway Patrol.

The Deputy District Attorney, David Uyar, said the suspect, 56-year-old Maritza Milan, of Indio, did cause an accident last summer. The accused pleaded guilty earlier in March to one count each of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and DUI resulting in injury. Both charges ultimately attract combined sentencing of eight years and eight months imprisonment, Uyar said.

The accident, which claimed the life of an 84-year-old woman from Escondida, happened on August 3, 2019, on a Valley Center road. The victim, Yasmeen Shaheen, was a backseat passenger in a Toyota Corolla, which got struck head-on by Milan’s vehicle near the intersection of Vesper and Cole Grade roads.

The California Highway Patrol reports suggested that the woman tried to bypass another vehicle prior to colliding with the Corolla. While Shaheen died on the way to a hospital, the driver and another occupant of the corolla received treatment for major injuries. Milan also ended up hospitalized with moderate injuries before deputies took him into custody, the accident reports revealed.

According to court documents, Milan would serve her sentence in the state prison.
