The California Highway Patrol is looking for a hit-and-run driver who struck and injured Benjamin Maisonet, 24, of Chico. The auto-pedestrian collision occurred in Willows, California, on Sunday afternoon, July 5th.
The accident report revealed that the incident took place around 2:50 p.m. on Highway 99W. The CHP said that an unidentified driver was heading north on the highway, just south of County Road 48. The vehicle was directly behind Maisonet and crashed into him.
The unidentified motorist failed to stop at the scene or render aid and remains at large. The investigators have not located the driver of the vehicle involved, and there’s currently no description of the two. Maisonet remains in the hospital in critical condition, and anyone with information should contact the CHP Willows Office.
A hit-and-run accident occurs when a car hits another or a person, object, animal, or property, and flees the scene without rendering help. Under the California Vehicle Code, a driver must remain at the scene of the accident, offer support to any injured person, and call 911. If there’s no injured person, but there is damaged property, check for the owner, and exchange contact and insurance information.
Prosecutors try the offense as a misdemeanor or a felony, and to convict, they must prove that the offender failed to do the above. The penalty for the two includes imprisonment in county jail and a fine. The sanctions also cover three years of probation, restitution for damaged property, and 2 points on his or her California driving license.
