Erik Baumle Arrested for Carjacking and Crashing into Police Vehicle in Irvine

The Irvine Police Department on Thursday, July 16th, arrested a man for carjacking and crashing into a patrol vehicle in Irvine, California. Erik Baumle, 31, would need the expertise of auto accident attorneys.

The IPD said that the event leading to the suspect’s arrest started with a male Caltrans worker sitting in his truck in the Boomers! Amusement Center parking lot, located at 3405 Michelson Drive. Baumle approached the vehicle’s passenger side, opened it, and threw his dog inside.

Sgt. Karie Davies said that the victim then exited the truck because he didn’t know if the dog was dangerous. The suspect then entered the vehicle and drove off. The Caltrans worker joined a colleague’s truck and began chasing his vehicle while alerting the police to the development.

Officers joined the chase, following Baumle to John Wayne Airport, where he crashed into the ceiling of a parking garage due to the truck’s height. Davies said that the suspect reversed, and allegedly intentionally crashed into an IPD vehicle before stopping. The man spent about 5 minutes inside the automobile before alighting and surrendering.

The police placed him under arrest on suspicion of carjacking, theft of a vehicle, and assault with a deadly weapon. The three are criminal offenses, and offenders are liable to jail time amid other punishments and orders of restitution. There is currently no information on the suspect’s bail or date of arraignment, and the investigation into the incident remains active.
