Sturgis Asher Dies in State Route 11 Traffic Collision

A male pedestrian lost his life in a traffic collision on State Route 11 in the Whitewater area of California on Sunday morning, July 19th. The accident report disclosed the victim’s name as Sturgis Asher, a 27-year-old resident of Landers. The Riverside County Coroner’s Office identified him.

The accident happened at about 5:15 a.m. near the Interstate 10 Freeway. A vehicle of unknown built and type struck Asher, and when emergency responders arrived at the scene, they found him unresponsive. The man did not regain consciousness, and the medics pronounced him dead at about 5:40 a.m.

There is currently no information on what Asher was doing on the highway when the crash happened. The driver of the vehicle involved stayed at the scene and cooperated with the investigation. The latter is ongoing with the California Highway Patrol heading it, and there are no charges at this time.

According to the California Office of Traffic Safety (Cal-OTS), auto-pedestrian accidents have gradually gotten to a crisis level. In an era where health and fitness practitioners promote walking as a healthy, positive, and community building alternative to driving, more people are getting killed or severely injured.

The agency places the blame at the feet of drivers and pedestrians. They are working together with the State Transportation Agency, the CHP, and the Department of Motor Vehicles to educate the two on the dangers of the road. OTS believes creating awareness and providing safety tips would go a long way in reducing fatality and making the roadways safer.
