Fatal Victim of Interstate 255 Crash Identified as Kyle Hill

The Illinois State Police on Wednesday, July 29th, identified the fatal victim of the multiple-vehicle collision on Interstate 255, Madison County, Illinois. Kyle Hill, a 29-year-old resident of Granite City, passed away on Monday, July 27th.

The accident report released by the ISP at the time showed that the incident took place at approximately 10:55 a.m. northbound milepost 26.6. Hill traveled too fast for conditions during heavy rainfall in a blue 2010 Honda. He veered off his travel lane across the center median and entered directly into the path of a southbound white 2018 Honda Civic.

The driver of the Civic, 45-year-old Todd Gerdes of St. Charles, Missouri, could not avoid the victim’s car and they collided head-on. The second vehicle rested on the right side of the southbound lanes while Hill continued northbound on the south road, placing him for the second time in front of a 2019 blue International truck-tractor semi-trailer.

The impact of the two collisions left the victim fatally injured, and medics pronounced him dead at the scene. Gerdes, and 25-year-old Edon Mehmeti, of St. Louis, the driver of the truck-tractor sustained non-life-threatening injuries and received treatment at an area hospital.

The ISP closed the affected roadway for about 30 minutes while they investigated. There is no additional information at this time. Accidents of this nature are preventable if drivers operate within the speed limit suitable for road and weather conditions, and have the appropriate tires.
