The Sonoma County Coroner’s Office in updated accident reports released on Monday, August 3rd, identified the man killed in an auto-motorcycle collision. Robert Soares, a 30-year-old resident of Lakeport, died after his motorcycle struck a bike in the Cloverdale area of California.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident took place on Saturday afternoon, August 1st. The investigators said that before the collision, Soares rode a Kawasaki motorcycle southbound on Highway 101 behind a Volvo driven by Scott Stanton, a 51-year-old Willits resident.

The motorist suddenly swerved onto the right shoulder of the roadway for unknown reasons and struck a guardrail. Then Stanton proceeded to correct the car but ended up veering across both lanes of traffic. Soares tried to stop his bike to prevent a collision with the Volvo but was unsuccessful.

At about 1:18 p.m, the victim collided with the back of the vehicle, and the impact ejected him from his motorcycle and landed him on the roadway north of Dutcher Creek Road. When paramedics arrived, they found Soares lying on the road unresponsive and pronounced him dead.

Stanton did not sustain any injury from the collision. The CHP said that neither the man nor the victim was speeding or under the influence of an intoxicating substance. The incident remains under investigation, and there is no additional information. Crashes of this nature are preventable if road users ensure that there is adequate space between their vehicles when on the road.
