Norberto Ocampo Identified as Pedestrian Killed in Yuba City Accident

The older pedestrian killed in a hit-and-run accident in Yuba City, California, has been identified. Updated accident reports released by the Sutter County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday, April 6th, named Norberto Ocampo, 81, as the fatal victim.

The sheriff’s office said that the incident happened around 12:40 a.m. on Wednesday, August 5th, at Garden Highway and South Percy Avenue. The events leading to the crash began with Ocampo walking on Percy, and crossing the intersection with Garden.

At the same time, a Ford Edge traveled eastbound on Garden. The police said that the driver of the vehicle, 20-year-old Kassidy Dunn, struck the pedestrian for unknown reasons. The woman fled the scene, and when firefighters and paramedics arrived, they found Ocampo lying on the roadway with extensive wounds and unresponsive.

The medics pronounced the victim dead, and the investigators began a search of the hit-and-run driver. Hours after the incident, Dunn, a Marysville resident turned herself in, and the police placed her under arrest.

They booked her into the Sutter County Jail for vehicular manslaughter and felony hit-and-run. The accident remains under investigation.

Under the California Vehicle Code, a person involved in an accident must remain at the scene, make an accident report to the relevant authorities, and provide help to an injured person while waiting. If there’s no injury or death, but there is property damage, the person must locate the owner and leave behind his or her contact details.

The person must still leave behind his or her information if the owner of the property is unavailable. Failure to obey this law is a criminal offence and offenders are liable to face severe punishment.
