The man killed after two vehicles struck him on a highway in the Modesto area of California has been identified. The Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office on Monday, August 10th, identified the victim as David Lawson, 41.

The accident report placed the time of the occurrence at about 3 a.m. Monday. The coroner said that Lawson walked across northbound Highway 99 when a vehicle struck him north of the over-crossing at Sierra Drive.

The collision force sent the victim into the middle lane, where a 1998 Ford Mustang struck him for the second time. The impact caused the driver of the vehicle to lose control and crash the Ford against a guardrail. The motorist did not sustain any injury, while Lawson died at the scene.

The report stated that the driver of the first car that struck the pedestrian fled the scene, and there’s no information on the vehicle or the motorist at this time. The Modesto Police are searching for the person, and anyone with helpful information should contact them at the station or the listed line.

Auto-pedestrian collisions in California are one of the leading causes of crash-related deaths. The Cal-Office of Traffic Safety states that drivers and pedestrians share the blame in this type of collision, and the two must work together to promote safe road behavior for their safety and that of others.

Pedestrians can do the above by wearing bright colors, avoiding jaywalking, sticking to crosswalks, and using flashlights at night. Drivers should yield to those walking, maintain the speed limit, and avoid running red lights and stop signs.
