The bicyclist injured in an auto-bicycle accident in San Diego, California, has been identified as Dan Sweeny, 65. The update made to the accident report on Thursday, September 3rd, revealed the fatal victim’s identity.
The San Diego Police said that a car struck the man on Friday, August 21st, at the intersection of Washington and India Streets in the Midtown neighborhood. The man was riding a bicycle when a 2005 Dodge Caravan minivan struck him west of the intersection.
The crash ejected Sweeny from his bike, and he ended up lying on his left side on the roadway. He suffered severe wounds, and medics rushed him to the hospital. The police said that 29-year-old Mauricio Flores and 50-year-old Jessica Bailey exited the vehicle and walked over to where the victim lay.
Video footage showed that the two looked at the Sweeny for a few minutes, pulled his bicycle from beneath the van, and set it aside. Flores and Bailey then reentered the vehicle and left the scene.
On Saturday, August 29th, a patrol officer with the Kern County California Highway Patrol saw the Doge, which had Georgia license plates in Lake Isabella. He reported the sighting to his agency, and at about 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 1st, another officer saw the minivan outside a Vons store.
The suspects had changed the vehicle’s license plate to that of Vermont. The officer called in KCSO deputies, and they arrested Flores and Bailey without incident. On Wednesday, September 2nd, SDPD officers picked up the two and charged the man with hit-and-run causing great bodily harm. They did not immediately state the charge against the woman.
