Costa Mesa Police Disclose Details Following Rima Abikaram’s Arrest for Elder Abuse

The Costa Mesa Police Department, California, on Thursday, September 3rd, disclosed the details of the events that led to the arrest of an elder abuse suspect. Officers took Rima Abikaram, 50, of Fullerton, into custody after video evidence showed her hitting a 91-year-old woman multiple times.

The news release by the CMPD revealed that the suspect was one out of the two people hired in 2015 to provide help for the bedridden victim who needs 24-hour care. The investigators said that the other caregiver noticed the older woman had visible injuries and expressed concern to her family.

The family installed a hidden camera to uncover the ongoings in the house, and it ultimately caught Abikaram abusing and striking the victim. The woman’s relatives terminated the caregiver’s employment and reported the abuse to the victim on Tuesday, August 18th.

An officer went to the victim’s home to take a report, and the police said that the footage showed that over four days, the suspect struck her at least 150 times. The woman suffered several injuries, including a black eye, swelling to her face, and a laceration to her arm.

Officers located Abikaram at her home on Tuesday, September 1st, and arrested her without incident. They booked her into jail and then released her the next day, Wednesday, September 2nd, after she posted the bail bond.

The Orange County District Attorney’s Office is reviewing the case. There is no additional information at this time.
