The California Highway Patrol is looking for a driver involved in an accident that injured a female driver and left a passenger dead. 66-year-old Rosa Olivera survived the two-vehicle collision in Merced County, California, on Thursday morning, October 8th.
Facts from the car accident report disclosed that around 8:40 a.m., 40-year-old Randy Alexander Avila drove a Nissan Sentra through a stop sign at the intersection of Bloss Avenue and southbound Palm Street, south of Delhi.
Olivera’s Chevrolet Sonic traveling at 50 miles per hour then broadsided the Nissan as Avila went through the intersection. The impact left the driver with injuries the CHP described as moderate, and medics flew her to Memorial Medical Center for treatment.
The Nissan was badly wrecked, and emergency workers had to extricate the 43-year-old female passenger who suffered significant injuries. The paramedics took her to Emanuel Medical Center in Turlock, where she later succumbed to her wounds.
The investigators will release the woman’s identity after notifying her next-of-kin. The highway patrol said that witnesses said Avila fled the scene on foot through nearby orchards. Officers searched for the man in the area but were unable to locate him.
The CHP noted that Olivera was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the collision time. They said the Nissan driver is a person of interest in the crash and asked the public’s help in locating him. Anyone with credible information on his whereabouts should contact Officer R. Kendall on the listed line.
