What began as a mother-son day out on Lake Piru, Ventura County, California, became a possible drowning case after “Glee” actress Naya Rivera, 33, went missing. According to the accident report released by the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred on Wednesday evening, July 8th.
In a press release, county officials said they are hoping for the best possible outcome, but preparing for the worst at the same time. Rivera was at the lake with her son, Josey Dorsey, 4, and the two were sailing together.
Sheriff Captain Eric Busch said that three hours later, another boater found the victim’s son asleep in the drifting boat with his mother nowhere in sight. The police searched the area both the air and in the water, but they were unable to locate Rivera. The boy told officers that he was swimming with the actress, who didn’t make it back to the boat.
The captain said a search of the vessel uncovered an adult-sized life vest, and Dorsey was also wearing one when they found him. The police reunited the boy with his family members, and as of Friday, July 10th, the search for the actress is still active.
Rivera’s possible drowning sparked a protest among the residents of Ventura County. Over 12,000 locals have signed a petition to get the city to provide more protection for swimmers at Lake Piru. The petitioners allege that the city failed to create warning signs to warn tourists of the dangers of swimming in some regions of the lake.
They are demanding justice for all those who have gone missing from the lake and want the city to assume responsibility. If the actress’s possible drowning becomes a certainty, then it would mark the 9th fatality at Lake Piru since 1994.
