The Alameda County Coroner’s Office on Thursday, February 13th, identified Alexis Castaneda Rodriguez, 20, as the victim of the car accident in Berkeley. He was alone in the vehicle, and the police have ruled it as a single-vehicle crash.

The deceased crashed her car into a light pole at the intersection of San Pablo and Ashby Avenue at about 9:20 a.m. The California Highway Patrol and EMT officers could do nothing for Rodriguez.

CHP closed down the intersection for several hours after the accident while officers tried to find out what led to the crash. They reopened the road by 1:30 p.m., and traffic flowed freely.

California has one of the most progressive transportation policies in the United States, but with a high accident rate. Alcohol-impaired driving is one of the most prominent causes of car wrecks in the state.

It has seen a steady rise over the years and has shown no signs of slowing down. The second common cause is drug-impaired driving; most drivers killed in vehicle accidents have about 15% of illegal or legal drugs in their system.

On average, one person dies every forty hours from a vehicle collision. Accidents are easily avoidable, and traffic officials have advised road users to always pay attention when driving.

Replying to texts, answering phone calls, and other distracting acts should be avoided. Drivers should also scan the road for potholes, which quickly causes accidents.

Road users should also drive at the recommended speed, and ensure they don’t get behind the wheel if they are suffering from any impairment. They should operate at a safe distance in between vehicles, and keep to the right side of the road.
