Antonio Navarrete Arrested Following Irvine Hit-and-Run Collision

An alleged drunk driver ended up in police custody last weekend after killing a woman and fleeing the accident scene in Irvine, California. The incident took place at night on Saturday, August 22nd, in Irvine, California.

The Irvine Police confirmed in a news release that they arrested 40-year-old Antonio Calixto Navarrete in connection with the crime. The suspect was driving a white Ford F-150 on Main Street and Culver Drive when he struck a Hyundai Elantra.

The collision happened at about 8:45p.m. and left the occupant of the black Elantra injured. Emergency crews transported a passenger in the vehicle to the Orange County Hospital, where she eventually passed away from her injuries.

Meanwhile, Navarrete failed to stop and assist the victims but fled the scene immediately. However, Irvine officers caught up with him shortly after during a traffic stop and detained him. The suspect failed field sobriety tests, indicating he was under the influence. Subsequently, Irvine police officers booked him on felony counts of hit-and-run, DUI and murder.

A Hit-and-run is a serious traffic offense in the United States. However, there is a distinction between hit-and-run property damage, and when a person is involved. In terms of property, it can pass for a misdemeanor. But when it results in loss of life or injury to the victim, felony charges may arise.

Seeing as fleeing accident scenes only aggravates the penalties attached, it is pertinent for offenders to report the car accident immediately to the appropriate authorities.
