The 40-year-old man involved in a fatal crash in the Irvine area of California faces a second-degree murder charge. The Orange County prosecutors filed the charges against Antonio Calixto Navarrete on Tuesday, August 25th.
According to Sgt. Karie Davies, with the Irvine Police Department, Navarrete operated a Ford F-150 that collided with a Hyundai Elantra at Main and Culver around 8:45 p.m. on Saturday, August 22nd.
The police said that the suspect drove away from the crash site, but officers stopped him shortly after. Davies said that a 20-year-old Irvine resident Isadora Stable traveling in the Hyundai suffered injuries and later died in an area hospital while receiving treatment.
The prosecutors also charged Navarrete with felony-hit-and-run with permanent and severe injury and driving with a blood-alcohol level over the legal limit of .08%. The man was supposed to get arraigned on Tuesday, but it got postponed to Friday, September 11th.
The man remains in custody without bail, and there’s no additional information at this time. Motor vehicle accidents elicit different responses from those involved, and it can make them flee the scene or remain.
The California Vehicle Code provides that those involved in an accident should stop at the scene or the next possible place where traffic won’t get impeded and return to the crash site.
