Authorities: Calixto Chan Cauich Killed In La Cañada Car Wash Accident

Last week, at the Foothill Car Wash in La Cañada, Los Angeles County, California, a man lost his life in what has been described as a freak accident. On Monday, March 9th, the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office identified him as Calixto Chan Cauich, 60.

The deceased died at the Pasadena Huntington Memorial Hospital. Sarah Ardalani, the coroner’s spokesperson said the cause of death was multiple blunt force injuries and ruled it an accident.

Cauich was an employee of the car wash, and he was carrying out his usual duties on Wednesday, March 4th, when tragedy found him. The preliminary report by the police stated that the deceased was detailing a Mercedes G360 on the west end of the lot located at 2355 Foothill Boulevard at about 3 p.m.

Suddenly, a 2007 Mercury Grand Marquis, in the control of a fellow employee, accelerated from the wash-line and collided with the Mercedes. Cauich was trapped underneath the vehicle, which proceeded to drag him from the car wash through the roadway.

The Crescenta Valley Sheriff’s deputies were the first at the scene, and the deceased was still alive at the time. The westbound lane of Foothill Boulevard was closed off while the fire department transported Cauich to the hospital.

The man survived the trip but passed away that same day at about 8:38 p.m. The employee who drove the Marquis told the police that a floor mat stuck under the pedal of the car caused it to accelerate against his will.

The accident is still under investigation, and the police are using surveillance video to uncover the truth as well as the vehicle which they impounded.
