Authorities: Woman Killed in Madera Vehicle-Pedestrian Crash Was Michelle Fern Starkand

The pedestrian who was killed over the weekend after being fatally struck by a truck driven by a teenager in Madera, California, has been identified in updated accident reports. The Madera County authorities, on Wednesday, April 22, disclosed the fatal victim’s identity as 55-year-old Michelle Fern Starkand.

The fatal crash took place late at night on Sunday, April 19, along Road 26. Officer responded to the incident just after 10:30 pm and found the dead victim lying off the roadway near a mangled up shopping cart.

Upon investigation, it was determined that Starkand was pushing a shopping cart eastbound on Road 26, in an attempt to cross the street near Avenue 17.

Before she made it across, however, a northbound vehicle, reportedly driven by a 19-year-old Madera resident, ran her over, causing fatal injuries.

Paramedics responding at the scene pronounced the pedestrian dead upon their arrival. Officers deduced that Starkand was a homeless woman who had previously resided in Stanislaus County and Merced County.

The teenager was not harmed in the crash, but his vehicle sustained front-end damages. The cause of the fatal crash is still being investigated.

The California Highway patrol advised motorists to pay utmost concern to the possibility of pedestrians on roadways at all times to prevent a recurrence of such incidents.

Further findings from the investigations would be included in the accident reports once made available.
