Ricky Ricardo Tappin Identified as Pedestrian Killed in Bakersfield Car Accident

The Kern County Sheriff’s Office disclosed the identity of the pedestrian killed in an accident in Bakersfield, California. Updates made to the accident report on Tuesday, September 8th, named Ricky Ricardo Tappin, 67, as the fatal victim.

The events leading to the man’s death began with a woman driving south on Union Avenue on Monday evening, September 7th. The driver lost control of her car, struck the pedestrian in the center median, and crashed into a building.

The incident happened around 7:45 p.m. near East 5th Street. Tappin suffered severe injuries, and medics pronounced him dead at the scene. Sgt. Ren Davenport said the driver showed no signs of impairment either with drugs or alcohol.

The woman remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation. The police said that the vehicle’s front end protruded from the building onto the sidewalk, and the crash led to the closure of the affected roadway.

Drivers lose control of their vehicles for several reasons, and they include but are not limited to adverse weather, especially rainfall, brake failure, faulty steering rods, and mechanical failure. Adverse road conditions or swerving to avoid an animal can also cause a person to lose control.

If any of the above happens, avoid panicking and keep a level head; think about options, and drown out fears. Don’t brake hard to regain control, don’t accelerate, steer in the opposite direction slowly, and use the emergency brakes if the primary one is not functional.
