A star of the basketball community in San Diego, California, suffered severe injuries after an accident on Saturday, February 29th. The authorities identified him as Cathedral Catholic High School basketball star, Obinna Anyanwu.
According to police reports, Anyanwu was driving on State Route 163 late on Saturday night, and close to the early hours of Sunday morning when a car swerved in front of him. The young man tried to avoid the other vehicle, and the move caused him to hit a guardrail.
Anyanwu was not injured by the crash and decided to get out of his car to access the damage done to it. He had barely stepped onto the roadway when a vehicle struck him down.
The 6-foot-7 high school junior suffered collapsed lungs and other injuries and was taken to the hospital by the first responders. There is no update on his health at the time of this report.
Authorities are still investigating the accident, but so far, they have not cited any of the drivers, and there’s no information on their identities either. However, under California law, Anyanwu can bring a personal injury suit against the two drivers.
The court will look at who has the most liability between both drivers before awarding damages. Hours before the accident, Anyanwu played at the Open Division Boys Championship and led his team to victory.
The injured teenager was the leading scorer of the night with 18 points in his team’s 59-51 win against Torrey Pines. The game was played at UC San Diego RIMAC Arena.
